TWO DAYS

Just had an amazing day. Or actually, two days! Yesterday my mom came to Breda, to help me with my projects, but also to distract me. I have to wait with a few things, till I get the chance to discuss them with my teachers, before I can continue and that was kind of driving me mad..

I had finally decided what new hairstyle I wanted, so I went by a hairdresser, trying to make an appointment for later that day. But they had a spot right away! Only downside was that my mom had to wait, but she was alright with that, she just went back to my place (and had a nice long nap).

Than I got a call from a realtor, responding to my email about an apartment that was available. Ok, this might need some explaining... I have been looking for a new place for several months. I had originally decided to stay in Breda after I was done with school, but I just couldn't find anything. Not something I could afford. So recently I had the thought: why not expand the search to Heerlen? It's where I used to live with my mom and she still lives there. It not the best city for Graphic Design work, but it's really cheap! So if necessary, I could always travel for work. He told me a bit about the place and asked me a few questions. I guess we both had a good feeling about it, because he asked 'I suppose you'd like to see the place?' and so we made an appointment for the next day.

So first I had my hair cut and dyed.. to black and short! I have to get used to it a little bit, but I'm really happy with it!

When I was done, my mom came back to the city (she's so awesome!) and we went to lunch. After a little shopping, I bought these amazing earrings and hair clips. Yay! I can accessorise again :) we went back to Heerlen.

In Heerlen we ate at Mc Donald's and spend the rest of the night on the couch, watching TLC (women's tv station). The next day we did a little bit more shopping, I was looking for a new summer-jacket and found this cutie on the sale-rack at Esprit. Still not cheap (€40,00), but I really like it! We also bought an awesome long skirt for my mom and a supersweet blouse with kittens for me :)

Then it was noon, we met with the realtor and the owner of the building, and looked at the place. It looked a bit smaller than I imagined, but still huge! It's almost twice as big as the place I live in now! It has an old fashioned but fine bathroom, separate toilet, bedroom with a HUGE build-in closet. Living room with balcony, etcetera, etcetera...

Plus, even better.. they're going to spruce up the place (paint the walls and a new kitchen)! I would have been happy with this, but ok.. I'm not saying no to that!

The realtor told me there was somebody else who was also interested, but hadn't let them know if he wanted the place or not. But if he did, the owner would have to decide and this cute, old man pointed at me and told him, he preferred me for a tenant. So I just said, yes please and guess what.. I'm moving 1 July 2012!!! Yay!

And last, but so not least.. I can have a little kitty!!! The previous owner had one too, but had to give it away, because the cat walked on his neighbours balconies and they complained. So I have to be alert that won't happen. I decided to start with just one and if she gets lonely I'll consider getting another one.

I'm so happy, everything is falling into place. I can now start organising everything, browse on the IKEA website, look for a job, etcetera.. and ONLY worry about graduating, because the most important thing after that, is taken care of.

TATTLY HACK

Fun! Tattly did a Tattly hack with one of the monsters!
Make sure to eat that ice cream before it eats you!

A combination of my Monsters, Julia Rothman's Beach Day and Blanca Gómez' Bubbles.

TATTLY

I’ve been reading the Swiss Miss blog for a few years, it’s a great source for graphic information and inspiration and with me, many, many others. The blog is written by Tina Roth Eisenberg, a Swiss design gone NYC.

A while back, she started a project a while back: Tattly.
James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem once said that “The best way to complain is to make things,” and that’s what Tina Roth Eisenberg, founder of Tattly did. Tired of putting poorly designed temporary tattoos on her daugther’s arm, she took matters into her own hands. In July of 2011, Tattly Temporary Tattoos launched online, featuring an all-star lineup of professional designers and illustrators.

I haven’t bought one of the designs, but thought it was a great idea! So when I received an email from Tina, asking me if I’d like to join with my monster-designs, I of course was honored and said yes! It has taken a while, but they’re available now on the website! It's a set of 7 monsters for $15,00, go get yours over here at Tattly.

A few other amazing designers at Tattly (and why I am so honored to be part of this!) March Johns, Blanca Gómez, Mike Lowery, Gemma Correll, and Oliver Jeffers.

Also awesome, the designs were on the Swiss Miss blog!

QUARTET GAME

I’m creating a lesson plan for one of my graduation-projects. Basically I want children to become (more) openminded about foreigners. It’s not necessarily a problem here in the Netherlands, but it’s always good to try and prevent discrimination. It’s a difficult subject to talk about, so I tried to approach the subject from a different angle. Just talk about where things come from and explaining that’s why they look different.

I got the idea from my research where I discovered lots of Dutch cliches are actually NOT from the Netherlands. I created a series of posters and now added the quartet game. The goal is to let children from the age of 6 to 8 become aware, and think about, origin. While playing and collection, they’re learning where things come from. Every set of cards is about a country, you can see the flag at the top right corner. Every quartet consists of the Dutch cliche, traditional food from that country, an animal that lives there and a plant that grows there.

NEED YOUR HELP!

I have been working on this project for so long, I just don’t see it anymore. So I need your help! When I first designed these illustrations, I added the papertexture-effect to make it less flat, to add another ‘layer’. But now I’m not sure if it really adds anything to the design. So what do you think??? With the effect or without? Thanks for your thoughts!

WEEKEND

Had a great Saturday. Visited my mom, sister and niece. We went to Schutterspark in Brunssum. It's a petting zoo/playground. The weather was great and we had lots of fun!
